What does the sensor actually measure?
The SaltCo Sensor uses a precision Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor to measure the depth from the sensor to the top of the salt in your brine tank. From this measurement, the app estimates how full your tank is, tracks usage trends over time, and predicts when you'll need to refill.
Will it work with my water softener?
Yes! The SaltCo Sensor is designed for universal compatibility. It works with all major water softener brands including Culligan, Kinetico, GE, Whirlpool, Kenmore, and more. If your softener has a standard brine tank with a lid, it will work.
How hard is installation? Do I need a plumber?
No plumber needed! Installation takes about 5 minutes. We include a drill bit that creates the perfect-sized hole in your tank lid. Then you peel off the adhesive backing, stick the sensor in place, plug it in, and connect to Wi-Fi. Our step-by-step guide walks you through it.
Do I need Wi-Fi? What about 5GHz networks?
Yes, you'll need a Wi-Fi connection. The sensor uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, which is supported by virtually all home routers. However, if your router is configured for 5GHz only, the sensor won't be able to connect. Most dual-band routers broadcast both frequencies by default, but some newer mesh systems or routers may need a quick settings adjustment to enable 2.4GHz. If you're not sure, check your router settings or give us a shout—we're happy to help you figure it out!
What happens if my Wi-Fi goes out?
The sensor continues to take readings and stores them locally. Once your connection is restored, all stored data syncs automatically. You won't miss any measurements—you just won't receive alerts while offline.
How accurate is the measurement?
The ToF sensor is accurate to within about 1 inch. For most tanks, this translates to roughly 5% accuracy on your fill level. The app also learns your tank's characteristics over time to improve estimates.
